About T-rex

Tyrannosaurus (T-rex) means tyrant lizard, taken from the Greek words “tyrannos” meaning “tyrant”, and “sauros” meaning “lizard”. They are also known as Tyrannosaurus rex in popular culture.

Tyrannosaurus rex was a bipedal carnivore, with a large skull and a heavy tail. The front limbs of Tyrannosaurus were small, weak, and disproportionate to the large, strong hind limbs. The measurements of the most complete specimen are: 12.3 m in length, 4 m high at the hip and weighing about 6.8 tons to 7.5 tons. The largest carnivore in its region, Tyrannosaurus rex was a carnivore at the top of the food chain, hunting prey although some scientists consider it a scavenger. Whether Tyrannosaurus ate meat or carrion is one of the most controversial topics in paleontology. However, most now agree that Tyrannosaurus rex was an opportunistic predator, practicing both predation and scavenging. It is one of the land animals with the greatest bite force.

Some scientists believe that tyrannosaurs were covered with feathers. Tyrannosaurus lived mainly at the end of the Cretaceous period in what is now the North American continent, when it was still an island, named Laramidia. Tyrannosaurus fossils were found in geological formations, dating back to the Maastricht layer, about 67-65.5 million years ago. They were one of the last dinosaurs to exist before the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction. Since it was first described in 1905, Tyrannosaurus has become the most widely known dinosaur in popular culture. “Tyrant Dinosaur” is the only dinosaur commonly known by the full scientific name Tyrannosaurus rex, and the scientific abbreviation T-rex is also widely used.
