About diamonds
Diamonds are formed from carbon-containing minerals under very high temperatures and pressures. On Earth, everywhere can have diamonds because at a certain depth, there will be a high enough temperature and high enough pressure to form diamonds. On continents, diamonds begin to form at depths of about 150 km (90 miles), where pressures are about 5 gigapascals and temperatures are about 1,200 degrees Celsius (2,200 degrees Fahrenheit). In the ocean, this process occurs in deeper areas because the temperature needs to be higher, so the pressure is also higher. As the pressure and temperature gradually decrease, the diamond also grows larger.
Diamonds do not originate from the Earth’s surface. Instead they form at the high temperatures and pressures that occur in the Earth’s crust about 100 miles below the Earth’s surface.
Most of the diamonds discovered were delivered to the Earth’s surface by volcanic eruptions from deep within the earth. These eruptions begin in the mantle, and on their way up, they tear off pieces of mantle rock that send diamonds to the raft.
These blocks from the mantle are called xenoliths. They contain diamonds formed at the high temperature and pressure conditions of the mantle.
People search for diamonds by mining rocks containing xenoliths or by mining soils and sediments that form when diamond-bearing rocks wash to the surface as the earth’s crust changes over time.
Some diamonds are believed to have formed during the high temperature/pressure conditions of the subcontinent’s subduction zone or impact site. Some are delivered to Earth in meteorites. However, to date no commercially developed diamond mines have been developed of this origin.
Why are diamonds so expensive?
After being mined, diamonds still contain a lot of waste materials and large volumes of stone, so the process of processing and removing waste requires advanced technology and large investment costs. Because of the difficulty and expense of mining and processing diamonds, it becomes especially expensive.
