The cat (Felis catus) is a domestic species of small carnivorous mammal. A cat can either be a house cat, a farm cat or a feral cat; the latter ranges freely and avoids human contact. House cats are valued by humans for companionship and their ability to hunt rodents (ex: mouse…). Today, about 60 cat breeds are recognized by various cat registries.
The cat have lived closely with humans for at least 9,500 years. Until recently, cats were thought to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt, where they were worshiped and are now the most popular pet in the world with more than 600 million. And cats have become familiar animals of many families, being close friends of children and young women.
The association of humans and cats led to it being often depicted in legends and myths in many cultures, including ancient Egyptian legends and myths, ancient China, Norway, and the King. Medieval Wales, Hywel Dda (the Kind) passed the world’s first animal protection law by outlawing killing or harming cats, with penalties burdensome for the offenders.
