Discovering about Sparrows
1. Characteristics to identify a sparrow: They have a stout and “dwarf” body, with dark brown (possibly brownish) fur, possessing a round swing, a round head, a short tail and sharp beak. Male and female sparrows are distinguished by their coat color: for males there will be red back and black covers; while the females have brown fur and stripes. The female is usually smaller than the male.
2. The survival instinct of the Sparrow: They can fly at high speeds up to 50 km/h to flee from dangers (predators) such as hawks, cats, dogs, owls, foxes, snakes, etc… Sparrows build their nests under roofs, under bridges or in tree holes. The male will be responsible for building the nest.
3. Food of the Sparrow: They are carnivores, their main food being caterpillars, earthworms and some other small insects. However, their eating habits can change according to the circumstances, such as when feed by humans, they can eat nuts, fruits and berries.
4. Reproduction characteristics of Sparrows: They breed between spring and summer, when the sun is warm and insects also “bloom”. Females lay 3-5 eggs at a time. The eggs will then be incubated for 12-15 days. Parent sparrows take care of eggs and chicks, together.
